The Geek’s Guide to Wizarding Mastery : Audiobook Review

*I was provided a copy of this series in exchange for an honest review*

The audiobook copy I received contained all four books in one set which is my favorite way to do audiobooks! I binge audiobooks like they’re chocolate chip cookies.

I gave all four books four stars so the average is of course four stars. I will divide this review up by the individual books so you can stop where you want to avoid spoilers if you decide to read the book! I will try my best to avoid spoiling the storyline if you do read all four reviews.

Overall-

I really liked the storyline and the plot felt unique while still fitting into the traditional young adult structure of a quest. I appreciated that the author chose to keep adult supervision in most of the important parts! It always amazes me how kids in middle-grade books run all around the city without their parents noticing! If I moved too far from the view of my parent’s window they were calling me home, and even into my late teenage years, I had to check in constantly.

The only thing that brought it down from 5 stars was the cheesy-ness of the pop-culture references. I am 100% down for nerdy and relevant characters but the use of “Allons’y” throughout the books bothered me since they never mention Doctor Who beyond using the catchphrase or the quote “bow ties are cool”. I love Doctor Who. I even have a line of Doctor Who stickers in my shop but I feel like they could have had a cafeteria scene catching up on Doctor Who lore before they get cut off to deal with the main plot or mention watching it on a plane. Just something to explain why they reference it so much.

How I Magically Messed Up My Life in Four Freakin’ Days

Our accidental hero Bryant Adams definitely gets started off on the wrong foot in the magical world. He starts off by burning down his school theatre…then his dad’s apartment. Whoops. Discovering an entire magical world beyond your own is always overwhelming but telling friends from foes is especially hard when people keep switching sides.

A great introduction to a new magic system and all the rules that maintain order. Consistency in the rules of magic was very well done.

Seven Things Not to Do When Everyone’s Trying to Kill You

Now that Bryant, Elizabeth, and Devon have been thrown headfirst into the world of magic. They need to fix all their (mostly Bryant’s) mistakes. Apprenticing with an outcast wizard isn’t the safest after-school activity so Bryant and Elizabeth run into a bit of trouble when their parents decide enough is enough. Devon’s parents give him more than just trouble and Lola steps in the kindest way.

Three Simple Steps to Wizarding Domination

The character growth in book three is amazing!!! Devon struggles to find his place as the only non-magical person in the crew. Our hero-in-training Bryant attempts the wonders of therapy. Elizabeth struggles with her choice to follow the path of a seer or the path her parents want for her. Eric has to decide how far he’s willing to go to get what he thinks is best…but is it best for everyone or just himself.

Five Spellbinding Laws of International Larceny

I love the realism brought to this story. How to define the line between doing everything you can to save the magical world without losing sight of your inner humanity. The inclusion of magical cats was also a huge plus for me.

Conclusion-

I think the series holds up to its claim of appealing to fans of Percy Jackson without feeling like a fanfiction/spin-off. Definitely recommend! The audiobook narrator did an excellent job. I would love to know more about where Eric came from and where Bryant and the gang decide to go with their futures.
