Reading Recap: Jan. ’22

I’m claiming January to be a wonderful start to a great reading year. One of my goals this year is to read more books I already own. Does it count as reading a book I already own if I buy it this year?

Reading Stats:

I finished 6 books in January of the attempted 8. I feel like those were pretty good odds.

  • 1 Physical Book
  • 2 eBooks
  • 3 Audiobooks
  • 1,964 Total Pages

Book Hauls:

My pre-order of the paperback copy of Winterkeep by Kristin Cashore finally arrived this month. It’s been killing me not to have it. I’m going to wait to read it for @thebatcavehasalibrary to catch up to book 4 so we can read it together.
My September and November Bookish Boxes finally came! September’s box was Defy the Night by Brigid Kemmerman and November was Autumn’s Tithe by Hannah Parker.

Mini Book Reviews:

In December I started the Discovery of Witches Trilogy so in early January I finished books 2 and 3. I have them as an ebook set thanks to the Christmas kindle sales. Shadow of Night was definitely a middle book. I loved all the different historical references. The story really came to a beautiful conclusion in The Book of Life. I found out the author Deborah Harkness is currently battling cancer which is really sad. On a happier note, her books have been made into a TV Show. The third season is currently airing, Sarah and I plan to binge all 3 seasons this year.
If you’re new here Sarah is my book bestie you can check out her content here.

The Sun and Her Flowers by Rupi Kaur has been on my Goodreads shelf as “Currently reading” for a ridiculous amount of time. I picked it up to finish it, read for about five minutes and decided it was time to officially DNF. The triggers were just too strong for me to comfortably read it. There is no reason to force yourself to read something you don’t like.

The January Prompt from Buzzwordathon was to read a book with “-ing” in the title. I made it halfway through Adulting: How to Become a Grown-up in 468 easy(ish) Steps by Kelly Williams Brown. I’ll try to finish it in February. This book seems like it would be great to read as a class of High School Seniors or College freshmen, as an already married and mildly established Adult it hasn’t had much new information for me so far. The chapters on Networking/Socialization would have been handy if I had read it when I was younger, in our current post(mid?) pandemic world it just made me sad.

The three Audiobooks I listened to this month were part of the set The Geek’s Guide to Wizarding Mastery by Megan O’Russell.

  • Seven Things Not to do When Everyone’s Trying to Kill You
  • Three Simple Steps to Wizarding Domination
  • Five Spellbinding Laws of International Larceny

I received them as an Audio-ARC for the release of the box set, so technically I didn’t buy them. *hides face*

There was a group read on Instagram of Crescent City: The House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J. Maas. I had intended to join in with the weekly readings but procrastinated starting it to be a responsible college student and get through finals first. I used it as a reward for finishing the set of classes. I ended up reading the whole book, a total of 803 pages, in four days. There was no sleep for most of those four days. Just reading Night and Day. The opening took me a while to get into but once the book hit the main plot I couldn’t put it down.

Looking Forward:

Since I’m writing this already into the first week of February, I can tell you I’ve already read 4 books this month.

The rest of my reading plans include:

  • The Tethering Series (4 audiobooks)by Megan O’Russell
  • Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper
  • Crescent City: House of Sky and Breath by Sarah J. Maas
  • The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan
