I asked God His favorite color
and He reached for my memories
The aurora dancing green and red
like visions of sugarplums in children’s heads
The dark winter sky showing stars above
evergreens and mountain scenes
I asked God His favorite color
and He took me home to
the rosy pink of Alaska’s nighttime sun
glinting off Denali’s peak
The riotous colors of summer gardens
and the violet shades of fireweed fields
rusting into red as
seasons pass and summer ends
I asked God His favorite color
and He reminded me
Of all the times and places
I wished I knew how to paint
Of cityscapes and candle light
Of mountaintops and riverbeds
Of daisy fields and daffodils
Of creatures that flutter and fly and
Of creatures that will never know the sky
I asked God His favorite color
and he showed me the ocean’s sunrise
oranges turning to pinks mixing with waves of blue and white
Golden light encompassing the shore
full of sandcastles from the night before
revealing treasures of shells children adore
I asked God His favorite color
and He showed me the desert’s sunset
reds and golds turning to purple-blue
so dark it feels like nothing and yet
so clear the stars feel like everything
The milky way shimmering above as
though they lead to Heaven’s Gate
I asked God His favorite color
and He asked me to look around
We walked city streets and desert roads
as dusk and dawn came again.
We saw children color streets with chalk
We saw dreamers painting walls
Spilling their hopes onto their canvases
Begging to make a difference
I asked God His favorite color
and He told me a story
Of a boat
Of a flood
Of a promise
A promise made of colors and dreams
I asked God His favorite color
and He told me
His favorite colors are the colors of His people.
My photos of the times I wished I could paint.
